Writing Groups

Let’s get real. It’s really hard to make time for your writing, especially when you’re doing All The Things.

And if your writing feels stressful, sticky, unsupported, blocked, confusing, or just plain hard, it is even harder to make it happen.

So if you’re wrestling with your writing, alone in the woods, hoping to make it out with a draft….

Or wanting to write in community but having trouble finding a space that feels right…

Maybe you want to learn more effective ways of organizing, scheduling, and doing the work of writing…

You could be looking for an intimate, supportive space to hold you accountable to your writing goals, week by week….

A writing group, facilitated by an expert coach, can do all that, and be fun, too.

Writing groups are powerful. See what they can do for your work.

Each week, we will meet as a group to do three things:

  • Reflect on the work that you’ve done so far

  • Troubleshoot any bumps translating your plans into words on the page

  • Set goals and make a plan for the next week of work

If you’ve ever felt like the only one who couldn’t break down huge tasks like “write a lit review” into “something I can do on a Tuesday in between two important things”, a writing group is a great fit. Not only do you get personalized support from a coach, you get to learn from each other and feel so much less alone in the process.

A week is just long enough to let you bounce back from a tough day or three, but not so long that you can get totally lost and off track. And with our shared work board, you can see how everyone else is breaking down their writing, and get that little bit of dopamine from checking things off in a place where we can all cheer you on.

With Katy’s guidance, weekly meetings, and a digital space for accountability, I was able to write and finish my first dissertation chapter by the end of the four weeks—a VAST improvement from the previous two years of failing to write much of anything. This group reminded me why I wanted to do this whole PhD thing in the first place.

A skilled facilitator makes things easy.

Sure, you can set up writing groups with your friends - but what if you don’t have anyone to write with? What if you are shy or embarrassed about your writing challenges? What if you just don’t have space for any more admin and organizing work?

With me, you can just show up. I do the work of setting the agenda, figuring out the software, asking the questions, and importantly, the hard work of making sure this is a safer community space. You don’t have to worry about sending reminders or balancing schedules or setting boundaries; I do the facilitation work so you can focus on growing your skills, and learning from each other. My focus is the group so you can focus on your writing.

Working with the group in this way was a surprisingly helpful experience. It reminded me of how far I’ve come, and reinforced that I’m ready to take the next step. It’s brought joy back into my process, and that’s been like a breath of fresh air.

Intimate community, powerful growth.

Starting in summer 2022, I’m running an 8 week writing group at two different times:

  • Wednesdays from 7-8 pm EST (July 6, 13, 20, 27, August 3, 10, 17, 24))

  • Thursdays from 9-10 am EST (July 7, 14, 21, 28, August 4, 11, 18, 25)

Enrollment for these groups is now open! As usual, there is a no-questions-asked sliding scale so you can choose the price that works for your budget, and there will also be a payment plan for those who prefer monthly payment options.

Frequently Asked Questions!

How private can I be?

As private as you need to be! We will use Zoom for the meetings, so you can set your display to be something you’re comfortable with, and same with our work board. I will also be setting explicit expectations for the group about privacy and confidentiality - so important with works in progress!

Is this a race to the highest word count?

Nope!!! Word count is just one way to measure writing progress - we’ll be talking each week about metrics, how to measure, and importantly, how to evaluate your work rhythms so that you can make educated choices about how and why you set up your schedule and tasks for the week.

What if I want feedback about the writing itself?

While the focus of our group meetings will be on the process - how to schedule, how to break down tasks, how to measure progress - each week I’ll put out a call for writing swaps so that if you have writing you want extra eyes on, you can get that as well.

What if I have to miss a meeting?

Life happens - and the uncertainty is definitely at an 11 lately. Meetings will be recorded so that if you miss, you can catch up afterwards, but our work board is always open. So even if you miss a session, you can track your work and get some visibility so that you aren’t totally alone.

How do the price options work?

You can either pay all at once or in monthly installments - both are completely the same, and both options are sliding scale. Just select the price option from the drop down that works for your budget, no questions asked.
